This page will be about the move from Canada to Florida and the things to watch out for…
Buying the House/property is another section
Do I want to exchange my current drivers license or go through the extra effort to keep the old one and get a Florida Drivers License.
Importing your vehicle?
You can drive your vehicle down, and many do and use it for your time in Florida or you can buy a new one. The third option is to import it from Canada and there is much to do for importing a vehicle.
Things to watch out for:
- Duty
- Age of the vehicle
- Ownership – in your name or a business?
Firearms
The movement of a firearm across the border has alot to it, such as:
- are you selling it to someone else
- Going hunting, temporary
- Moving/relocation
For the transportation of firearms there are alot of costs to consider, in my view… alot of firearms you may be better of selling and buying at the new location since the costs add up fast… the only firearms I have shipped so far (expect 3 month+ to get this done) are those with family sentimental value, the costs will be more than they were worth BUT they were Grandpa & Dad’s.
- Shipping – To the broker if it is permanent.
- The broker costs shipping it across the border, marking if required, sending in the paperwork, and they will also figure out the duty and handle the shipping from the broker to your local FFL (required for shipping between states due to differing laws)
- Duty and taxes.
- Broker Fees – they charge their fee and they ain’t cheap!
- Shipping from the broker to the local FFL (Federal Firearms License).
- FFL at the final destination will charge a fee too, seems to be usually $25 or $30 per firearm.
Brokers * required for permanent changes, they fill out the required forms, do the firearm markings required by law handle the shipping.
- Airlines – check with them individually since it may change
